Common Juvenile Offenses in Colorado

  • Underage Drinking Commonly referred to as a MIP or MIC (minor in possession or minor in consumption), this term applies when anyone under the age of 21 is found to be drinking or in possession of alcohol.

  • Underage Drinking and Driving Sometimes referred to as UDD (Underage Drinking and Driving), occurs when anyone under the age of 21 is accused of drinking and driving. There are potentially long-term driver’s license consequences to minors who are charged with driving under the influence.

  • Drug Crimes Drug crimes can include simple marijuana, cocaine, heroine possession up to intent to distribute charges depending on the amount of drugs found. It can also include possession of drug paraphernalia. You want your child to have knowledgeable legal counsel to assist them through the court process.

  • Assault Charges Assault charges can be misdemeanor up to felony charges. Your child needs an experienced attorney to assist your family through the process.

Penalties for Juvenile Crimes in Colorado

Juvenile cases are handled much differently than adult cases in Colorado. The sentencing laws are different, and the options the court and District Attorney have are different than those in adult court. The juvenile court typically focuses on rehabilitation of the juvenile, which can also include parents being required to participate in counseling or groups. Sentences can also include punitive sanctions such as electronic home monitoring, home detention, or even detention at a juvenile facility. The process can be very stressful and confusing as there can be many different agencies involved in you and your child’s life.

You will want an experienced attorney who knows what the options are. Many times a juvenile may be eligible for diversion programs or a deferred adjudication. You want someone by your side who knows those programs and can advocate for your child’s best interests.
